Frequently Asked Questions
What does a periodontist do?
A periodontist is a dental specialist who focuses on preventing, diagnosing, and treating gum disease, as well as performing procedures like dental implants and gum grafts. At Kiama Dental Specialists, our team provides comprehensive care to restore and maintain the health of your gums and supporting structures for long-term oral wellness.
When should I see a periodontist instead of a general dentist?
If you’re experiencing persistent gum bleeding, swelling, or loose teeth, it’s time to see a periodontist in Kiama. These are early signs of gum disease, which require specialist attention. Your general dentist may also refer you to us for complex treatments like Gum Graft or periodontal surgery.
What are the main causes of gum disease?
Gum disease typically develops due to plaque buildup, poor oral hygiene, smoking, genetics, or systemic conditions like diabetes. At Kiama Dental Specialists, our team provides personalised treatment plans — from deep cleaning to Non-Surgical Periodontal Therapy, to help reverse early gum disease and prevent further progression.
Are dental implants right for me?
If you have missing teeth and healthy gums, you may be a good candidate for a Dental Implant. Our periodontists in Kiama assess your bone structure and oral health before recommending a solution. Dental implants not only replace missing teeth but also help maintain jawbone strength and natural facial structure.
What is the difference between gum grafting and crown lengthening?
A Gum Graft restores receding gums, while Crown Lengthening reshapes gum and bone tissue to expose more of the tooth. Both are performed by our periodontists to improve gum health and aesthetics, depending on your unique dental needs.
How does regenerative surgery help with gum disease?
How does regenerative surgery help with gum disease?
Regenerative Surgery is an advanced procedure that encourages natural tissue and bone regrowth lost due to gum disease. Our Kiama specialists use innovative materials and techniques to restore the foundation of your teeth — improving both function and long-term oral stability.
Is periodontal treatment painful?
Most patients experience little to no discomfort during periodontal treatment thanks to modern anaesthetic and sedation techniques. Our periodontists prioritise your comfort, whether it’s a deep clean or an Implant and Graft procedure. Post-treatment sensitivity is temporary and manageable with proper care.
Do I need a referral to see a periodontist in Kiama?
You can book an appointment directly, but many patients come through referrals from their general dentist. If you’ve been advised to see a specialist for gum disease or implant care, our team will work closely with your dentist to ensure seamless treatment and communication.
How should I prepare for my first periodontal appointment?
Before your visit, we recommend reviewing our patient Info section for details on what to bring and how to prepare. This may include dental x-rays, medical history, and your referral (if applicable). Our friendly team will guide you through every step to make your first appointment stress-free.
How can I book an appointment with Kiama Dental Specialists?
Booking with us is easy; simply contact our friendly reception team to schedule your consultation. Whether you’re dealing with gum disease, missing teeth, or aesthetic concerns, our periodontists in Kiama are here to provide advanced, compassionate care designed for long-lasting results.
