Frequently Asked Questions

Yes, you can claim the cost of a periodontist’s appointment through your private health insurance. You will need to check with your health fund provider to ensure your level of coverage.

No, periodontists are not covered by Medicare. You will be responsible for the full cost of treatment unless you have PHI that includes periodontist treatments.

If you have sore, swollen, bleeding, or receding gums, bad breaths or issues with dental implants, then it may be time to book an appointment with a specialist periodontal dentist. Your general dentist may also find evidence of gum disease or poor oral hygiene and refer you to a specialist.

No, you don’t need a referral to see a periodontist. However, we do accept referrals from your dentist if they feel you need specialist periodontal treatment.

Oral surgery is a parallel specialty to periodontics. While oral surgeons specialise in wisdom teeth extraction, surgical extraction and bony lesions removal etc., periodontist are the specialists that focus on gum health, bone health and plastic surgery of the soft tissue inside the mouth, typically managing gum disease, implants surgical placement, bone and gum graft etc. Both specialities are registered dentists with further registration in their own of field of specialisation.

Yes, a periodontist can fix gums. They will use a range of techniques to treat receding gums and gum diseases, depending on the cause and severity. This can include a deep clean and de-scale for early gum disease. Or if significant disease has impacted root surfaces and led to bone loss, surgical treatment options may be recommended.

Periodontists are experts at performing atraumatic extractions. While general dentists, oral surgeons and Maxillofacial surgeons perform standard surgical extractions, surrounding bone and gum may at times need to be compromised to deliver the teeth/ root fragments. Periodontists use special tools and skillset to remove teeth/ root fragments by minimizing the deformation of adjacent bone and gum, preserving its morphological integrity for the future potential plans of implants or other prostheses. Periodontists are like the plastic surgeons in dentistry, we keep the end goal of aesthetic in mind throughout the treatment.

Periodontists typically do not offer fillings as a routine service. However, it is worth discussing it with them, as some will perform them if needed.

If you have, or are at risk of, gum disease or dental implant disease, then seeing a periodontist is worth it. They can help achieve better oral and gum health, thereby preventing diseases.

The frequency of appointments depends on your individual health and needs. You can discuss this with one of our Sydney periodontics specialists at your initial consultation!
